Pokemon GO: News, tips and tricks! [15 Sept 2018]

banner

Pokemon GO is a mobile app that allows you to wander around your neighbourhood and catch your own pocket monsters. But if you’re here, you should already know that. This guide is not for players just starting out who are wondering how to throw a PokéBall. If you do need help with the basics, check out Niantic’s FAQs or this handy starter guide.

Tips and tricks

If you see a PokéStop with a white ring around it, that means you haven’t spun that PokéStop since Pokémon GO update 0.67.1/1.37.1. The ring will go away the first time you spin it, and give you some bonus XP for your trouble! It is designed to encourage you to explore new areas.

A coloured ring around a Pokémon can tell you something about the reason it has spawned. Those with a white/light blue ring around them (see above image) indicate a Pokémon that is spawning because of the current weather boost, while those with a pink ring around them are due to you currently having incense activated. If it has a pink ring, chances are the people you’re playing with won’t see that Pokémon, so keep it to yourself (if you’re being nice) or brag about it incessantly.

Appraisal

You can use the ‘appraisal’ feature in Pokémon GO to determine which of your Pokémon are best to evolve based on their stats. (That is, if you haven’t downloaded an IV overlay app for your phone yet.) Appraisals vary from team to team, with only overall and individual stat analysis really making any difference to Pokémon performance (i.e. don’t worry about the size of your pocket monsters).

Updates

Kanto ‘Ultra Bonus’ event

Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos are now available in 5-star raid battles (13 Sept – 20 Sept). After that, Mewtwo will appear in raids (20 Sept – 23 Oct). This is your opportunity to pick up a shiny legendary bird, or your first Mewtwo!

From 13 Sept – 30 Sept, Kanto spawns are increased in the wild, including the elusive Lapras and Chansey, among other interesting Gen 1 Pokémon.

Five new shinies were made available at the start of this event: Geodude, Graveler, Golem, Grimer, and Muk.

Gen 1 regional Pokémon (Kangaskhan, Farfetch’d, Mr Mime, and Tauros) been made available in 7km eggs. These eggs can only be received through gifts from friends, so make sure you have space in your inventory before accepting gifts over the next couple of weeks. The chance of a regional hatch is approximately 13%, which is 4% per specific regional. 7km eggs can now also contain Tangela and Porygon, as well as the original Alolan versions of Gen 1 Pokémon.

Raids have changed during this event. Raid eggs now only take 15min to hatch, and raids last for an hour and a half. The raids list is as follows:

Tier 1 : Bulbasaur, Charmander, Dratini, Magikarp, Squirtle

Tier 2 : Electabuzz, Lickitung, Magmar, Magneton

Tier 3 : Alakazam, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Machamp, Scyther

Tier 4 : Golem, Lapras, Rhydon, Snorlax

Tier 5 : Articuno, Moltres, Regirock, Zapdos
